This week at Hill Street Farmers' Market

e-Newsletter, 1 September 2011

Every Saturday morning, 8:30am - 12:30pm Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, Hill St, Thorndon

Enjoy a taste of the region at Hill Street Farmers' Market

New at the market this Saturday.

Ruahine Wines will be joining the market once a fortnight, bringing you dry and medium fruit wines and fruit ports.  Their blueberry, boysenberry and Black Doris ports have the unique quality of being aged with NZ native Mountain Totara.  Ruahine are the only commercial winery aging with NZ native wood instead of oak.  Their winery is in Dannevirke and the fruit used in the wines and port is organic or spray free and picked at the height of ripeness.  Ruahine have just won the trophy for the best fortified wine in NZ.

Ruahine Wines will alternate weeks with Avatar Estate Wines so you can buy quality wine at the market every week now.  In addition, there is delicious apple cider and apple brandy available from The Apple Quarters as well as pear and apple juice from The Apple Quarters and Wairarapa Eco Farm - so you can get drinks for all occasions at the market!

Supporting Fair Trade

Supporting local producers, and ensuring they get a fair price for their products, is an important reason to shop at a farmers' market.  Looking further afield, we also like to ensure that any imported products are also fair trade - coffee for example.
As many of you will know, the banana industry is one of the most polluting and exploitative of its workers, and the advent of fairtrade bananas in New Zealand is very welcome.  To support this worthwhile initiative, and because we know it is an important issue to many of you too,  we will occasionally have fairtrade bananas available for sale at the Information Stall.

Green Wellies - Recycle your plant pots please

Green Wellies is a group of friends who enjoy gardening and growing food.  Overwhelmed with promiscuous perennials and an overflow of vegetable seedlings, Bee, Anna and Adrienne are offering their garden surplus for sale at Green Wellies stalls on 19th, 26th November and 10th December.

Meanwhile they are desperate for pots, particularaly the 9 cm variety - plastic or terracotta will do.  If you have some to donate please bring them to the market this Saturday and put them in the large cane basket at the market entrance.  Thank you.

Seafood City will have delicious naturally smoked salmon this Saturday - a wonderful start to Fathers' Day lunch perhaps!

Cupcakes for the SPCA.

Chrissy Grainer raised $148 for the SPCA at her fundraising cupcake stall last Saturday.  Thank you to everyone who bought yummy cupcakes and supported this worthy cause.
